almost like a real town

I'm loving the holidays. The local shop, the Venus Bay General Store is open until 9pm! Such convenience :)

They normally close around 6.30, so if you don't get there early enough, the Tarwin Lower supermarket is normally open until 7 or 8pm, and maybe later at this time of year.

Luckily, I'm easily pleased....

I read something earlier about a proposal in 2004 to build a new estate of 2,000 homes in Venus Bay. The locals at the time were against it it seems. They saw it as a threat to Venus Bay's splendid isolation. I have to say I'm glad it didn't go ahead. How many people can you put on a giant sandbar anyway? It might have led to better local services, such as garbage collection or street mail delivery, but the dirt roads and lack of facilities are part of the charm. Turning Venus Bay into something like any other coastal town would be a shame. As the world gets faster and more connected, it's good to know that there are still some places where you can escape from it all.

Andrew,

Just thought you would like to know that the people of Venus Bay have strongly voted against kerbside garbage collections, and as for street mail delivery the people of my home town are more than happy to drive the five kilometres to the post office in Tarwin Lower to collect their mail. This furthe cements the close-knit community of the twin towns.

I'm glad you enjoyed your visit to the town that is always in my heart.

Cheers!

Hi Snufty,

Thanks for letting me know about that.

I agree. I have no issue with going to the post office and taking the rubbish to the tip either. It's only 5 minutes up the road. I live in Venus Bay and love it the way it is too.

Some of the older people without cars might find the kerbside collections handy, but I'm sure there are plenty of locals to help them out. I'd be more than happy to take some stuff to the tip for anyone who had trouble doing it themselves.

It's a great place the way it is and it would be a great shame if Venus Bay was to ever become over-developed. There are hardly any places like it left.

Do you still come back for the holidays?

Cheers,

Andrew.

Hey Andrew

Sadly I can't get back home as often as I want to, as I now live in Geelong and my car is currently off the road. Whilst no-one lives in our house anymore we still use it as a "holiday" house, and my parents are often there during the long weekends and holidays.

I've noticed from other websites that there is a new playground at both Jupiter Park and the Tarwin Lower Jetty. Otherwise nothing much else has changed since I last lived there in 2004, which is awesome.

I also understand that the pub in Tarwin Lower is under new management again, and I can also say thank God for that. The owners that took over in May 2004 were Melburnians that tried to run the pub in a way that it never should've been, and were the worse people to work for. I'm glad I quit when I did!
